Three Reasons Hotels Can Make Better Financial Choices Than Hostels

Many people that are travelling on a budget, particularly backpackers, will automatically assume that a hostel is going to work out much cheaper than a hotel, and then book accordingly. However, though the actual price of the room is often higher, a hotel does provide a number of advantages over hostels that can radically reduce the price difference between them.

Here are just three.

1. Drastically Reduced Risk of Theft

Hostels in Australia are generally quite safe, with separate locks or key codes for the main door and the door of every separate room. You should also find lockers in each room in which you can place your valuables.

Be that as it may, you'll still be placing more than a little trust in the people you're sharing a room with. Unfortunately, these are not people you know, and they may only be staying in the hostel for a night or two. If one of them chooses to pinch your phone or laptop and leave, there's very little you'll be able to do. That could mean an expensive replacement.

2. Far Better Food

Most hotels will offer breakfast, but, as budget accommodations, they aren't going to go all out to provide you with a good meal.

While many hotels will offer a free, or at least reduced-price, buffet that contains foods such as eggs, bacon, and sausages, most hostels will simply offer toast and a few spreads. With the former option, you'll be able to start your day off well with a filling meal; with the latter option, you'll often need to buy a larger meal when you're exploring the area in order to make up for a woeful breakfast.

3. Complimentary Services

Just as hostels can't usually afford to provide a filling breakfast, they'll also tend to offer very few complimentary services. Hotels will often provide Wi-Fi access, computer usage or airport transfers free of charge, but the same can't always be said of hostels.

Even the little things can add up. For example, most hotels provide a small sachet or shampoo and toothpaste, but hostels rarely will. Since these liquids are now tricky to take on flights, you'll usually need to take the time to buy them yourself if they aren't provided by your accommodation.

Hotels provide privacy and comfort that can't be matched by a hostel, and those benefits are accompanied by others that can really reduce your costs. So next time you're planning for accomodations for a trip,
